Women in Technology Uganda works to improve the lives of women and girls in Uganda. Women and girls risk being left outside the labor force or trapped in vulnerable or low-quality employment, due to a lack of skills, absence of quality jobs, and gendered expectations of their roles as caregivers. We ease this burden by providing them with market-relevant skills, support to start own businesses, and connection to work opportunities. We provide them with tech tools to support them excel in and out of school, enabling them to thrive in their communities. Our work focuses on focuses on girls’ education and women’s empowerment.
Worldwide, nearly 1 in 4 girls between the ages of 15 and 19 are neither employed nor in education or training – compared to 1 in 10 boys. We work with low resourced schools providing digital tools and coding skills to improve learning outcomes for the girls. Statistics show that when girls perform well in school, they are less likely to be taken out early. Our Code clubs teach girls how to code. This helps them develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills. These skills have helped them improve performance not only in science subjects but also in the arts. We work closely with schools offering the Kolibri digital learning platform which we worked with UNICEF in Uganda to build content and the FUNZA game that is embedded into the platform. As of 2020, we are working with 20 schools across all regions of the country.

Investing in women significantly contributes to ending world hunger and poverty. When women have control of assets and financial independence, there is improved food security and nutrition, more children go to school and community resilience.
We equip women who own micro and small enterprises with the tools, resources, and expertise they need to make their businesses thrive and grow. We help them to build skills needed to operate and grow a successful business, take advantage of the internet to promote their goods and services. We provide them with digital financial products including a digital SACCO, access to credit, and bookkeeping services. Our business training and mentorship tailored to this target group helps the women understand business basics, financial literacy, and go to market strategies to help their businesses thrive and grow.
With new confidence, they are able to negotiate for higher prices for their goods, better pay at their jobs, raise their voices against injustices in the community, and get out of toxic relationships.
When we invest in women, we are investing in the next generation.
