COVID19 has disrupted nearly every business and way of life. As countries went into total lockdown. Trade, investment, business viability, and employment are all affected and the crisis will also have an impact on the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. During this pandemic, technology has proved more useful than ever before. The majority of businesses that are still open are running their operations online/digitally. And it is likely, even after the pandemic subsides, that technology skills and technology-driven processes will become ever more useful in a shrinking, more efficiency-driven economy.
WITU developed an online marketplace for women-owned micro and small businesses. WITU has pivoted to offer more women business owners access to customers who want to use, or are already using, digital methods to buy. Many people will likely continue to shop online well beyond COVID19. We want to ensure that more small women business owners will be able to process digital payments. This platform is for micro and small women businesses. We want to provide every businesswoman with an to serve customers who might never step into their shop.
We have already enabled easy payments through secure cashless transactions. We have put in place local payment methods such as mobile money and Visa using local companies. This is further protection for women sellers and purchasers
We know that this will also create new jobs and will enable women to grow and enhance their business. We anticipate over 2000 women will develop their own work opportunities as a result of this support. For example, a woman with tailoring skills who has no place to set up a brick and mortar shop will have access to our platform to market her business online. The e-commerce platform will create opportunities for women who are not in any income-generating activity.
We are looking for women entrepreneurs, traders, resellers to join the platform. Your support will go towards onboarding, training, and marketing the platform across East Africa.
